Earn Rebates For Residential New Construction Systems and Appliances

Builders of single-family residential homes who purchase and install qualifying natural gas equipment or meet the whole house standards of the North Carolina Energy Conservation Code ("NCECC") High-Efficiency Residential Option (“HERO”) may be eligible for multiple rebates.

Before You Start Your Rebate Application

Congratulations on making your business more energy efficient! Before you start your rebate application, we want to make sure you understand the eligibility requirements so that your application can be accepted, and your rebate processed. Here are the requirements:


  • This program is available to existing or new Piedmont commercial customers in North Carolina who are installing qualifying high-efficiency natural gas equipment. The N.C. Commercial Rebate Program applies only to customers served by the Commercial Rate Schedules 102 or 152.

  • Equipment must be installed at the property where the gas account is located.

  • Rebates are not available for the equipment replacement of an alternative fuel source such as electricity or propane.

  • Rebates are not available for used or refurbished equipment.

  • Customer site must use natural gas for heating in order qualify for smart thermostat rebate.

  • A detailed document showing proof of installation must accompany the application. Examples of proof of installation are, but are not limited to, installation receipts, invoices, contracts, and sales receipts.

  • Applications must be submitted within 150 days after the equipment installation.

How do I apply for a rebate?

Before you start your project, make sure your project meets the eligibility requirements for the rebate.

As you complete your qualified updates, make sure you obtain proof of installation to include when you apply for your rebate. After the work is finished, you can complete and submit your application online.

Eligibility

  • Rebate incentives are available to builders and developers who build new single-family energy efficiency homes in the North Carolina Piedmont Natural Gas service territory.

  • Eligibility for this program is based only on single-family dwellings. Multi-family dwellings are not eligible for this program.

  • Builders can choose to participate in one of two incentive options: 1. The whole house HERO option OR 2. The equipment measures only option. The builder is not eligible to receive both the HERO and the equipment measures only rebate combined under this program. For the HERO option, a 90% AFUE furnace must be installed to be eligible.

  • For the equipment measures only option, a 95% or higher AFUE furnace must be installed in order to qualify for the smart thermostat rebate.

  • For the equipment measures only option, a detailed document showing proof of installation must accompany the application. Examples of proof of installation include, but are not limited to, installation receipts, invoices, contracts and sales receipts. If choosing the HERO option, you might be required to obtain documentation from your Energy Rater stating the home complies with the NC HERO requirements.

  • Equipment must be installed at the property where the gas account is located.

  • Applications must be submitted within 150 days after the Certificate of Occupancy (C.O.) date.

  • Beginning January 1, 2012, the North Carolina Building Code Council launched the High Efficiency Residential Option (HERO), which is detailed in Appendix 4 of the 2018 N.C. Energy Conservation Code. This voluntary “stretch” code is comprised of measures that achieve 15% to 20% better energy efficiency.
  • You will need to complete the rebate application truthfully and legibly in its entirety. You can submit your rebate application online. The builder portal allows you to create a login/password to submit multiple rebate applications and to keep track of all applications submitted.
  • The level of supporting documentation required when submitting your rebate application(s) will depend on the HERO or the equipment measures only option chosen. If choosing the HERO option, you might be required to obtain documentation from your Energy Rater stating that the home complies with the NC HERO requirements. If choosing the equipment measures only option, a detailed document showing proof of installation must accompany the application. Examples of proof of installation include, but are not limited to, installation receipts, invoices, contracts and sales receipts.   • No, multi-family buildings are not eligible for this program. Eligibility for this program is only based on single-family dwellings.
  • N.C. builders whose name is on the Piedmont service account and who meet the program eligibility requirements are eligible. See the rebate program application for more details regarding how to set up an alternate payee. Note, depending on the rebate dollar amount, a W-9 may also be required to submit with your rebate application.
  • Applications must be submitted within 150 days after the Certificate of Occupancy (C.O.) date.
  • Checks are generally mailed within six weeks. Additional time may be needed during periods of high application volume or for applications that are submitted with incomplete information.
