Grants include $100k in assistance for low-income individuals and families and $100k in grants for organizations involved in relief effort

Operations Update from Piedmont Natural Gas Regarding Tennessee Flooding

  • All service requests continue to be responded to as they are received with most being worked the same day they are received or the next day.           
  • Calls from Tennessee customers this past weekend (approximately 450) were somewhat elevated over normal call volumes.           
  • Piedmont has received and will be working approximately 70 “turn service on” requests, 140 “check water heater” requests, and 140 “turn service off” requests today (Monday, May 10).

Safety Update from Piedmont Natural Gas Regarding Tennessee Flooding

  • Piedmont’s top priority remains the safety of its customers and employees and the safety and integrity of its natural gas system.           
  • In response to the flooding, Piedmont is replacing every natural gas meter and regulator that was submerged as a result of rising floodwaters. This is to ensure their safe and efficient operation.           
  • Do not attempt to disconnect your natural gas service or work on or around your natural gas meter.           
  • Piedmont reminds customers not to attempt to relight or repair any of their natural gas appliances themselves and to use only licensed contractors who follow all safety and manufacturer guidelines.           
  • If your natural gas appliance has been damaged or submerged by floodwaters it must be replaced (see link below for additional information on the replacement of natural gas appliances due to flood damage).           
  • Customers should exercise care in removing flood debris – flood erosion may have left some natural gas piping exposed. Before any digging or excavating, customers should call 811 to have their natural gas (and other utilities) lines located.

Operations Update from Piedmont Natural Gas Regarding Tennessee Flooding

  • Calls from Tennessee customers continue to run just slightly above normal call volume.                   
  • Piedmont has received and will be working approximately 100 requests from customers to turn on natural gas service for today (Saturday, May 8).

Update from Piedmont Natural Gas Regarding Tennessee Flooding

  • Since Saturday, Piedmont Natural Gas contact centers have received over 3000 calls from Tennessee customers impacted by the recent flooding                             
  • Yesterday, Piedmont Natural Gas has:
    • Received 1,050 calls from Tennessee customers, just slightly more than normal call volume
    • Received and worked 28 leak calls
    • Received and worked 112 “check water heater” calls
    • Worked 715 requests to turn off natural gas service, bringing the total number of requests worked since Saturday, May 1 to 3,096
    • Worked 81 requests to turn on natural gas service, bringing the total number of requests worked since Saturday, May 1 to 251
  • Piedmont will be concentrating several of its crews in the downtown area today, closely coordinated with city personnel, as that area has become accessible for assessment and inspection                             
  • Piedmont currently has no outstanding emergency orders                             
  • Piedmont crews will be working flood related orders throughout the weekend                             
  • Piedmont continues distributing flyers to customers stressing safety and providing information about what customers should know about flood related damage to their natural gas service or natural gas appliances. Piedmont is also providing information about natural gas appliance dealers in Nashville                             
  • Tennessee customers will begin receiving a special bill insert related to safety issues and flooding concerns starting this coming Monday, May 10                             
  • Piedmont personnel will be providing 500 hot dog meals to flood relief volunteers at the Bass Middle School parking lot today from 10:00 to 2:00 PM. The volunteers will then distribute the meals to flood victims in the nearby neighborhoods

What Tennessee Customers Affected
by the Flood Need to Know

If water has entered your home or come in contact with natural gas appliances:

  • Call Piedmont Natural Gas at 800-752-7504 so we can inspect your meter and your natural gas appliances for possible flood damage.                               
  • Do not attempt to disconnect your natural gas service or work on or around your natural gas meter.                               
  • Do not attempt to relight any of your natural gas appliances.                               
  • Do not attempt to clear flood debris from your natural gas meter or from any other natural gas appliance, including your water heater.

If your natural gas appliances have been damaged or submerged by flood waters:

  • Do not attempt to make repairs yourself or use unauthorized, unlicensed individuals to work on your natural gas appliances.                               
  • It is imperative that residents choose a licensed contractor who follows all safety and manufacturer guidelines.                               
  • Unauthorized repairs can be unsafe and may void your warranty. Call your appliance manufacturer if you are unsure about work being performed.                               
  • All natural gas appliances damaged by water should be replaced.                               
  • You can choose to work with Piedmont Natural Gas or other local approved Gas Advantage Dealers to replace damaged appliances.                               
  • Customers can view technical information on water heaters on Piedmont’s website at www.piedmontng.com.

If your home was not damaged by flooding, but your natural gas service was interrupted, call Piedmont Natural Gas to schedule an appointment.

Update from Piedmont Natural Gas Regarding Tennessee Flooding

  • Since Saturday, Piedmont Natural Gas contact centers have received over 2000 calls from Tennessee customers impacted by the recent flooding.                                    
  • Piedmont Natural Gas has received and responded to more than 400 emergency calls.                                    
  • Piedmont Natural Gas has also handled:
    • 449 natural gas leak service calls
    • 305 calls to check water heaters
    • 2381 orders to turn off natural gas service
    • 170 calls received from customers to turn on natural gas service
  • Today, Thursday, May 6, 2010, Piedmont Natural Gas is working:
    • 77 calls to check water heaters
    • 36 requests to turn natural gas service back on
  • All service requests are responded to as they are received and there is currently no backlog of orders.                                    
  • Calls from Tennessee customers are assigned to a dedicated customer service response team.                                    
  • Piedmont Natural Gas is working closely with customers impacted by the recent flooding and conducting leak surveys in neighborhoods to ensure a safe return to service. Piedmont Natural Gas is urging all customers who need assistance to call 1-800-752-7504 to speak with a customer service representative.

Important safety information related to your natural gas service

Effective immediately, Piedmont Natural Gas is offering the financial assistance listed below for customers affected by this weekend's flooding in Tennessee. These temporary measures will remain effective for at least the next two months.

Call 1-800-752-7504 to speak with a customer service representative!

No Disconnects for Non Payment

  • Piedmont will not disconnect any customer for non payment of their natural gas bill

No Late Payment Charges

  • Piedmont will not apply late payment penalties to customers for delayed payments

No Charges for Insufficient Funds

  • Piedmont will waive the handling fees for customers whose payment by Automatic Bank Draft is returned for "insufficient funds"

Equal Payment Plan (EPP)

  • Piedmont will not remove any customer participating in the Equal Payment Plan for "insufficient funds" (EPP allows customers to spread their payments over a full 12 months, reducing the amount due each month)

Expanded Payment Arrangements

  • In addition to existing payment arrangements, customers with no more than three late payments during the last year will be accepted for the Equal Payment Plan (EPP)                                           
  • To request this service, customers will need to call Piedmont Natural Gas at (1-800-752-7504)                                           
  • Customer having difficulty paying their bill should call Piedmont Natural Gas to discuss available options

Reconnection Charges

  • For customers displaced by the flood and moving to temporary housing where natural gas service exists, Piedmont will connect the meter at no charge to the customer
    • Customer will be responsible for the monthly natural gas bill at the temporary location
    • When customers displaced by the flooding return to their homes or businesses, Piedmont will reconnect the meter at no charge to the customer
  • For customers who have not been displaced, but whose natural gas service was disrupted due to flooding, Piedmont will reconnect the meter at no charge

At Piedmont Natural Gas, our top priority is safety. With many of our customers in Nashville and the surrounding communities affected by flooding, we would like to share the following advice related to your natural gas service:

If water has entered your home:

  • Call Piedmont Natural Gas at 800-752-7504 to schedule an appointment.                                                   
  • Do not attempt (under any circumstances) to disconnect or work on or around your natural gas meter.                                                   
  • Do not attempt to relight any of your natural gas appliances. Call Piedmont so we can inspect your meter and your natural gas appliances for possible damage.                                                   
  • Do not attempt to clear flood debris from your natural gas meter or from any other natural gas appliance, including your water heater. Call Piedmont for an assessment.                                                   
  • Never use outdoor equipment indoors for cooking or heating. This includes natural gas grills, generators, etc.                                                   
  • If your home was not damaged by flooding, but your natural gas service was interrupted, call Piedmont Natural Gas to schedule an appointment.

If your natural gas appliances have been damaged by water:

  • All natural gas appliances damaged by water should be replaced.
  • Choose a contractor that follows all safety and manufacturer guidelines.
    • You can choose to work with Piedmont Natural Gas or one of our approved Gas Advantage Dealers to replace damaged appliances.
    • If you choose to work with a different contractor, check to make sure they are committed to safety and are willing to follow all manufacturer guidelines.
  • Unauthorized repairs can be unsafe and may void your warranty.
    • Check the manufacturer safety guidelines for your appliance, and make sure your contractor follows these guidelines.                                                   
    • Call your appliance manufacturer if you are unsure that the work being performed is an approved repair.                                                   
    • Unauthorized repairs could create unsafe conditions and/or void your warranty.

If you suspect a natural gas leak (natural gas smells like rotten eggs):

  • Leave the premises immediately.                                                   
  • Call Piedmont Natural Gas at 800-752-7504 or dial 911.
    • Do not use your home phone
    • Call Piedmont from a neighbor’s home
    • Use a cell phone only if you are outside the home and away from the smell of natural gas
  • Do not use anything electrical inside your home that may cause a spark (this includes all appliances and cell phones)                                                   
  • Do not attempt to locate the source of the leak.                                                   
  • Do not attempt to stop the leak.Do not attempt to turn off your natural gas.

Status of Services in Tennessee:

  • Piedmont is rescheduling non-emergency appointments so we can focus our resources on helping customers who have been most directly affected by the flooding. Thank you for your patience.                                                   
  • We have no major outages at this time but will conduct a complete assessment of our facilities once the flood waters subside.                                                   
  • We are working closely with the City of Nashville, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), and other officials to ensure public safety.

Piedmont Natural Gas would like to provide the following additional emergency information to its customers in Nashville and middle Tennessee in response to the extreme flooding that has occurred.

The safety of our customers is our top priority. If your home or business has been flooded and you have concerns about your natural gas service or natural gas appliances in use:

  • Contact us at 1-800-752-7504.

  • Piedmont Natural Gas will log your call and, as floodwaters recede and we are able to safely enter your home or business, we will do so and assess the situation.

  • It may be necessary to shut off natural gas service to your home or business initially in order to assess any damage to your appliances or natural gas service.

  • Do not try to turn your natural gas service off on your own.

  • As a reminder to our customers, if you smell the odor of natural gas (similar to rotten eggs) do not turn on or off appliances or lights, do not use your home phone. Leave the premises immediately and call Piedmont Natural Gas at 1-800-752-7504 from a neighbor’s home or your cell phone.

  • We appreciate the patience of our customers during this unprecedented event and we will continue to provide updated information as necessary.
