Getting New Service

To get new gas service in your commercial building, the building must have a service line and a meter set. A service line is the gas pipe that runs from the street to a building's gas meter. It must be installed before the meter. The meter set measures the gas consumption from the building. Follow these guidelines to request a service line and meter.

Step 1: Initial Contact
Fill out the Discover Natural Gas form.  A Piedmont representative will contact you to inform you whether gas is available or if any additional steps need to be taken.

Step 2: Sign Commercial Service Agreement
Your Piedmont representative may need the following information:

  • Site plan showing needed gas meter location
  • Estimated gas load (prefer equipment list with gas capacities in BTU/HR) - determined at initial meeting
  • Gas delivery pressure needed at meter set (inches or pounds)
    • Standard meter pressure is 7" unless requested - maximum meter load of 1600 cubic feet per hour (cfh)
    • 2 psig and 5 psig pressures available in most locations
  • Dates needed for service and meter installations
  • Person to contact for schedule changes
  • Name, phone number, job address and permit address
  • Special consent forms such as requests to replace asphalt, re-seed, etc.

The time expectation for installing a service line (weather permitting during non-holiday periods) is:

  • Winter: up to six weeks
  • Spring/Summer/Fall: up to four weeks

Step 3: Request a meter set
Once your service line is installed, you are ready for your gas meter to be set. A Piedmont service representative will install the meter for your building. Please contact your local Piedmont Natural Gas office , ask for your Commercial Sales Representative, and request a meter set. Your Piedmont representative will need the following information:

  • Service line inspection approval by city or county with jurisdiction. (In some locations, Piedmont contacts city or county for approval to set meter) Tell us the building permit number
  • Same information as service line request.
    • Site plan showing needed gas meter location
    • Estimated gas load (prefer equipment list with gas capacities in BTU/HR)
    • Gas delivery pressure needed at meter set (inches or pounds)
      • Standard meter pressure is 7" unless requested -- maximum meter load of 1600 cubic feet per hour (cfh)
      • 2 psig and 5 psig pressures available in most locations
    • Dates needed for service and meter installations
    • Person to contact for schedule changes
    • Name, phone number, job address and permit address
    • Special consent forms such as requests to replace asphalt, re-seed, etc.
    • Immediately communicate any changes affecting the building's gas equipment to the local Commercial Sales Representative to prevent service or meter installation delays.

Time expectation for meter set:

  • Allow four working days after inspection approval for meter to be set
  • Additional time may be needed during Fall Light-Up Season (Sept.-Dec.) or for conditions such as inclement weather

Time delays may be caused by:

  • Change in service location (one to two-week delay)
  • Change in loads (two-week delay)
  • Change in meter pressure (two-week delay)
