Piedmont Gift Brightens Holiday for ‘Extreme Makeover' Family 12/18/2012

Lincolnton Foster Parents Appreciate Savings From Switch to Natural Gas Even More
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Dec. 18, 2012) – Reality shows like “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” are fun to watch, but did you ever wonder what happens after the camera crew leaves and families are left with their big new houses and the energy it takes to run them?

In the 12 months since moving into their Extreme Makeover home in Lincolnton, foster parents James and Devonda Friday and their eight children have discovered the comfort, convenience and cost savings of the natural gas they use for heat, hot water and cooking. And today, in conjunction with the Dec. 17 broadcast of the ABC show featuring the family and their new home, Piedmont Natural Gas is helping make the Fridays’ holidays brighter with $500 in gift cards.

“Piedmont Natural Gas is honored to support James and Devonda Friday, who have done so much for the community as a whole through their role as foster parents to more than 30 children and adoptive parents of six,” said Tim Greenhouse, Managing Director for Safety and Community Relations at Piedmont. “Piedmont believes that by supporting individuals such as the Fridays – both immediately and through long-term energy savings – we will build stronger communities and everyone will reap the benefits.”

As part of the Extreme Makeover project, Piedmont donated $25,000 in equipment and labor, including four tankless water heaters that are 62 percent less expensive to operate than a standard electric tank heater. And with eight children in the house, hot water is always in demand for baths, showers and an average three loads of laundry a day.

“If anyone has any doubt about the benefits of switching to natural gas, just talk to me – a mom of eight – and hear my story,” said Devonda. “Natural gas has really reduced our energy bills and has helped us tremendously.”

Because the tankless water heaters heat water fast and only when needed, Devonda’s old fear of the shower running cold is a thing of the past.

“Before we moved into this house and had natural gas, we used to run out of hot water,” she said. “That doesn’t happen anymore. I used to start bath time and tell the children not to take forever because we would run out of hot water. It has truly been a blessing.”

The Fridays say their overall energy bills are lower because of the switch to natural gas. A natural gas tankless water heater is 62 percent less expensive to operate when compared to an electric tank model. Natural gas is 47 percent less expensive than electric when used for drying clothes, 22 percent less expensive when used for space heating, and 47 percent less expensive than electric when used for cooking.
