Goal Is To Spark Students’ Interest In Science, Technology, Engineering And Math
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 9, 2012) – Backed by a $25,000 grant from the Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation to Guilford Education Alliance, 11 teachers from Guilford County Schools will immerse themselves in local industry this summer in an effort to make science and math more relevant and fun for their students.
The 2012 STEM Fellows will participate in three-week “externships” in industries that apply knowledge in the so-called STEM disciplines – science, technology, engineering and math. The teachers will have experiences they can take back to the classroom to show students how mastering STEM subjects in school can open the door to future career opportunities.
“Improving education in science, technology, engineering and math is essential to the future of our economy and our nation as a whole, and the Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation is proud to partner with the Guilford Education Alliance and Guilford County Schools on this effort,” said Timothy Greenhouse, president of the Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation. “The insights these Fellows bring back from diverse industries such as aerospace, biotech and financial services will help them make STEM learning more engaging and relevant for their students.”
Teachers, industry participants, elected officials, education leaders and representatives from Piedmont Natural Gas and the foundation will be on hand to launch the program today at an event hosted by the Guilford Education Alliance, which is operating the program. The event starts at 10 a.m. at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, 2907 East Lee St., Greensboro NC 27401.
The $25,000 grant from the Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation will be used to defray program expenses, including daily stipends for the teachers, who were selected for the externships through a competitive application process.
Industry partners on the project include TIMCO Aerosystems, Syngenta, Lincoln Financial, Lenovo, Gilbarco, Proctor & Gamble and Thomas Built Buses.
