Piedmont presents $9K in scholarships to poster contest winners Date Posted: 04/19/2012

Nine Students from Elementary, Middle and High School Levels Awarded $1,000 Each

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 19, 2012) – Piedmont Natural Gas will award $1,000 scholarships to nine Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) students Friday, April 20, for their winning entries in a poster design contest promoting energy efficiency. The contest was part of the school district’s  Environmental Stewardship Initiative.

The winning elementary, middle and high school posters will be unveiled and the scholarship recipients will be announced at a ceremony at Mountain Island Elementary School, 7905 Pleasant Grove Rd., at 10 a.m. Friday, April 20, designated as CMS Environmental Stewardship Day.

“As a company, Piedmont Natural Gas is focused on sustainable business practices and being good stewards of our economic, social, and environmental resources,” said senior vice president Jane Lewis-Raymond. “With Earth Day just a few days away, Piedmont Natural Gas is truly honored to recognize these bright young students who, through their creativity and their understanding of the importance of being good stewards of our energy resources, are showing us a path toward a more energy-efficient future. We applaud our poster contest winners for the inspiring example they set for all of us.”

Students were invited to participate in the poster design contest and were challenged to depict energy efficiency. The judging panel included the CMS Energy Manager, City of Charlotte Community Energy Conservation Coordinator, Sustain Charlotte Executive Director and the VP of Sustainability for the Charlotte chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The panel selected the top three entries from the elementary school level, middle school level and high school level for display at the recent Sustain Charlotte Sustainability Awards, where event attendees voted for their favorite in each category.

CMS is partnered with the North Carolina Environmental Stewardship Initiative of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. This partnership is the first such partnership in Mecklenburg County and the first K-12 partnership in the state.
